The South was a labor-extensive industrial economy so after losing its free labor, their economy became devastated. They didn’t have enough sort of infrastructure to shift to an industrial economy. Majority of the war happened in the South so they also had to deal with the damages and rebuilding. The South lost the value of its currency after losing the war. Thus today, poverty has still a high rate in the Southern economy.
