The new government faced a multitude of problems that demanded a strong federal government. The US had piled up a huge national debt during the American Revolution and since the government wasn't able to collect taxes they couldn't pay off the debt. The federal government also had no power to regulate the nation's trade. Some states issues their own paper money which caused changes in the value of currency and economic chaos.
