Existing evidence that demonstrates the influence of campaign have been sought by political scientists for decades now. However, at best, the evidence is mixed. Regularly, the correlation between the vote on a relevant issue and the interests of a donor is what is demonstrated, nonetheless it doesn’t prove causation - that the cause as to why the legislator voted that way was due to the donation.

The belief that even a $5,000 donation can be a deciding influence to a lawmaker’s vote is questionable in the circumstance of elections where elected House candidates put out a minimum of $1 million, and the Senate candidates also put out a minimum of $50 million.
