    Both were overconfident.

    Both thought they were in the right.

    Both thought that if there was war. War would be over very quickly. Some said by Christmas.

    Newspapers said to take D. C. or take Richmond, and the war would be over.

    Southerners all thought that they could whip Yankee (backside).
