What motivates dexter to attend a famous school in the east?

Dexter was motivated by his strong desire to have the best of everything. He has grown up around people with higher status than his family who were merchants so he decided he want to surpass everyone in success, and opts to go to an expensive East Coast college because of its prestige, instead of a local school to study business.
