The master-apprentice relationship was a mutually beneficial relationship. For the apprentices they would get the training they need while their food and shelter was being provided by their masters for free and upon reaching the status of the journeyman they could work for money. On the other hand the master's didn't have to pay them salary and after the apprentice master the trade he was an asset to the shop.
