1948 saw large scale protests in Ghana, also called the Accra riots. They began from the city of Accra and initially consisted of decorated local soldiers who fought with the British in World War II but never got the promised pensions and jobs on return.

While a peaceful protest in the start, it eventually became deadly when the British opened fire on the protestors, leading to even more riots in the coming days.

Nkrumah among other local politicians were immediately arrested by the British authorities for orchestrating and inciting protestors.
