Why was al-azhar so important?

Al-Azhar University is a university in Cairo (Egypt). It is the oldest university in Egypt, founded in 970 by the Fatimids. Its students studied the Qur'an and Islamic law. It also was one of the first universities in the world. In 1961, Al-Azhar was re-established and wide range of secular faculties were added: business, science, engineering, medicine. Al-Azhar is important for its mission to propagate Islamic culture.

Al-azhar Mosque is located in Cairo, Egypt created on 970. It was supposedly named after Muhammad's (prophet of Allah) daughter Fatimah, who was given the title pf az-Zahra which means 'the enlightened one'. It is now a university which it centers on the study of Sunni Theology and Islamic laws.
