What was chaucer's original plan for his masterpiece?

    Geoffrey Chaucer originally wanted each character in the Canterbury Tales to tell four stories. He wanted them to tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. However, instead of having 120 tales, it only has 24 tales.
