As the Treaty of Tordesillas initiated the clarification of land rights for Spain and Portugal, this meant that other imperialists, as well, would need to move quickly in order to occupy and claim other lands yet unexplored for their own empires. The significance of developing access to natural resources for the economy would later be seen via the continued exploration for alternative trade routes and the aggressive campaigns against any competitors for the land, including the decimation of local indigenous populations.
