Imperialism led to increased rivalry and tensions over prime colonies. several imperial questions on sphere of influence were not settled. The more colonies a country had the more the sense of national prestige and thus imperialist powers went a long way to acquire as many colonies as possible. questions of expansionism and the immediate threats of opponents led to the alliances that were witnessed in Europe prior ww1.
