What was a difference between immigrants who arrived in the united states during the 1840s and 1850s and the "new" immigrants who began arriving in the 1870s?

    A large number of Irish immigrants came to the United States during the 1840s and 1850s due to the Great Famine. During the 1870s and 1880s, there were a large amount of immigrants from Germany and England, and steam powered ships made the journey significantly easier.
