The Huang River deposited fertile topsoil that was necessary for farming. As a result, the people gave up their nomadic life and began farming. Early farm settlements developed into villages. Fixed settlements resulted in a more orderly government, which led to a written language. However, the Huang also caused loss of life by flooding. The flooding sometimes changed the course of the river.
