Spread of Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam all demonstrate the significance of Southeast Asia's proximity to India. All three came through India and spread into Southeast and Far East Asia. Buddhism and Hinduism grew directly out of Indian local customs and were spread organically through rule or proselytizing to these nations but Islam was brought as part of rule. As Islam spread from the Middle East as part of Muhgal culture, they were able to spread into parts of Southeast Asia and bring the jihad to these areas.
