The Imperial governments want to maximize profits which demanded cheap labor, control of markets to buy or sell products and access to natural resources such as land and precious metals, and had to meet these demands by hook or by crook. After the Industrial Revolution, the dependent colonies provided raw materials to European factories and markets to manufacture products. Imperial merchants established warehouses and trading posts and created infrastructure for transportation. Imperial powers also competed with each other for the best potential resources, trade, and markets.
