How and why was the Old South a "slave society," with slavery permeating every class and group within it, free or unfree?

    I think the South was considered as a slave society because it evolved into one. The European colonizers had turned the South into a slave state because of the plantations they possess in the South. They have brought their slaves and bought more because of the cheap labor it brings.
