How did the majority of homesteaders build homes on the prairie in the late 1800s? They constructed homes out of sod from the area. They bought lumber from the East to build homes. They hired immigrant workers to build their houses. They traded with American Indians to obtain tents.

    Commonly these were smaller houses that weren't meant to last very long. Lumber and stones and other higher quality material was very expensive so they couldn't do it with it, so they just used sod and similar materials to build their homes.
