Protestant reformation? how did this affect roman catholic control of europe?

The Protest Reformation introduced new ideals on how and who should interpret the bible which clashed with the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. Thus, as the new religion spread many began to reject the Roman Catholic Church which weakened the Roman Catholic Church's power. Religion at the time would dictate society hence the struggle between the kings and the pope but with the Protestant Reformation the kings would see a way to weaken the pope's power by siding with Protestants. While Protestants did not believe in needing someone to interpret the bible for them, the Catholics did and this would be one of the key reasons the two could never unite as one again. Catholicism would be heavily rejected for years to come with some nations prohibiting the practice of Catholicism until the mid 20th century.
