The Treaty of Fort Laramie signed in 1851 was especially significant for Western expansion since i t enabled the safe travel of white immigrants on the Oregon trail upon the guarantee of Native Americans. The treaty also served as a peace treaty for the eight tribes that are often at odds with each other.
