What motive did the two superpowers have for fighting surrogate (proxy) wars?

    Proxy war is a contention between two nations where neither of them connect with the foe straightforwardly. The motive is that United States battled to stop the spread of socialism and the Soviet battled to continue pushing socialism and keep comrade nations to remain comrade.
