The Catholic church was highly dissatisfied with the protestant reformation since they started losing power all over Europe while also believing protestants to be heretics. They decided to have a council where they would reexamine some of their doctrines and see how to fight the reformation and devise a plan for counter reformation and ensure the survival of Catholicism.
