The second largest portion of Brazil population today is made up of the descendants of slaves brought from Africa. In 1549, the Portuguese brought the first slaves to Brazil from Africa. They were made to work in the sugar fields and in the mines. By the time slavery was abolished in 1888, close to four million slaves were brought to Brazil.
