This event was called the Louisiana Purchase. President Thomas Jefferson bought the French land from Napolean for 10 million dollars, which was quite cheap for how much land was traded. This event was the spark which caused Westward Expansion to "begin" per say. Because the United States was double the size, there was a lot more resources and land to find and explore. The Louisiana Purchase led to the Lewis and Clark Expidition a few years after.
