In fact there was little resistance to the US take over and only 7 people were killed. A nationalist movement in the 1930s gained popularity and it resisted assimilation into the US. It was made into a US commonwealth country eventually that could elect its own governor. Oscar Lopez Rivera, a fighter for Puerto Rican independence was freed recently in the US after a 35 year jail term.

US forces faced little reaction when they decided to take Puerto Rico from Spain in the course of its war with them. This last Spanish outpost in the Caribbean was secured with little resistance and few American casualties in August of 1898. After the Spanish-American War ended a few months later, the island was officially ceded to the US.
