    Block grants are big amounts of money that are given to states for programs. Last 1971, Nixon made had more than a hundred programs that he wanted to divide into six block grants.

    In the New Federalism of President Nixon and Reagan their decision of empowering the states through rechanneling of block grants and funding of programs to the local government that was before under federal programs.

Republicans have supported block grants that put public service projects into the states' hands as they believe the federal government should not provide those services. For Nixon and Ford it was putting liberal policies into blocks and giving the authority to the states to run the programs.
