Subduction is a geological process that occurs at the intersection between two tectonic plates where one plate is pulled down beneath the other. This causes an interaction with the mantle and commonly produces earthquakes and volcanoes along the boundary. The movement of the tectonic plates causes the lower plate to collide with the mantle material below, which in turn can drive up (displace) magma through the crust to form volcanoes.
