The land would have to have provided the English colonist with a water supply and arable land. Good locations would have been by a river or estuary as in with most civilizations access to water aids in the transportation of people for trading, and the water supply assists in the hygiene of the community, as well as ability to fish and hunt other wildlife who use the river for their food source; a regular and reliable water supply also enables irrigation for growing crops.
