How valid were congress's reasons for trying to impeach president johnson?

    President Johnson was impeached because of The Tenure of Office Act. He was questioned by Congress that he could not dismiss a cabinet member without the consent of Congress. He removed Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. However, it did not materialize because of the Senate vote that gave him a higher vote as not guilty.
