Political philosophers have suggested that representatives can choose to behave as delegates or as trustees, A delegate is a representative who votes consistently with the desires of the majority he represents, while a trustee is a representative who votes based on what he believes. I would mix both approaches, voting as a delegate in some cases and as a trustee in others.
