What were the main effects of the Punic wars on the Roman republic?

    The Punic wars basically led to the decline and downfall of the Carthaginian empires and the emergence of the Roman republic as the dominant empire in the European arena of the time. Rome annexed important city states of Sicily and imposed heavy silver fines on Carthage that weakened the empire a great deal.
