It was rumored Clay became Secretary of State because he threw his support for Adam's who became President.

John Quincy Adams secretly met with House members and offered monetary rewards in return for votes.

William Crawford intentionally removed himself from the running so Adams could win.

    Was widely believed that Clay, the Speaker of the House at the time, convinced Congress to elect Adams, who then made Clay his Secretary of State. Jackson's supporters denounced this as a corrupt bargain.
