The privilege to allow the slaves to purchase their freedom was no longer available but allowed to enter into contracts. They were also prohibited from making complaints against their master. Masters are required to give them Sundays off, they could not separate young children from their mothers, and required to care for the old and disabled. Punishments was more severe in Louisiana’s Black code.
