Why was the status of texas such a divisive political issue in the early 1840s?

    Texas was quite a large territory and had a large number of people. Bringing it into the Union as a slave state would have tipped the balance in the House of Representatives, giving slaveholding and supporting members much more clout there in comparison to the Senate.
