The electoral college gives smaller states outsize influence on the election: smaller states are guaranteed at least three EC votes (2 Senate + 1 HR). This leads to the votes of each individual having more weight than those of the more populous states. In addition, as seen in the 2000 and 2016 elections, a candidate can win the overall popular vote while still coming up short in the electoral college.
