    Very likely, if they had tried they would've created awar. The wall was built in Eastern territory, not Western.

    President John F Kennedy agrees. "A wall", he said at the time, "is a hell of a lot better than war."

    Plus, the Iron Curtain was already in place. The specific problem with Berlin was that it was the easiest place to escape from East to West.
