Cecilia found a pamphlet called "how to protect yourself from the flu" at her doctor's office. the pamphlet includes the information below. a major pandemic of the spanish flu occurred in 1918. most people who were infected died within a few days by suffocating after their lungs filled with fluid. the virus was identified in the fall of 1918, when it was brought to the united states on a war ship from france, but it could still not be contained. it spread quickly in wartime conditions; soldiers lived and worked in small, crowded spaces, such as barracks, foxholes, and warships. the armistice day celebrations, which brought large groups of people together at parades and parties, allowed the virus to continue spreading. entire fleets and platoons of soldiers became ill and were too sick to fight.
