    The Articles of Confederation were so bad. They were ineffective because of one simple reason. They put too much power in the hands of state governments and, because of this, everything was a huge mess. Imagine it. Every state making their own money, making treaties, etc. Yeah ...

    All of these (making currency, declaring war, etc) are now entrusted to the national government, as they should be.

    So, just to clarify, the thing Americans were distrustful of was: a strong central government.
