What was the primary purpose of the english settlement of jamestown, and how successful were the colonists in achieving that goal in the first twenty years?

    Their primary purpose was to establish a somewhat autonomous independent settlement. They weren't successful because they mostly died from things like disease or starvation. They also had many conflicts with the natives which also caused problems for the colonists.
