How did southern whites punish african americans that they deemed to be troublemakers?

Even before, southern whites not only hates the Africans as they were often their slaves. They follow the customs of England and generally despised poor whites as well. They are very authoritative that they consider making the Africans their slaves and taking away their freedom.
