Why were northerners, who moved to the south in search of fortune after the civil war, called carpetbaggers?

    When they traveled, they carried cheap luggage, which were called carpetbags. They were mass produced during this time (reconstruction era) and therefore, the many people coming down with them from the north were referred to derisively as carpetbaggers.
