The radiocarbon dating starts with measuring Carbon - 14 (a radioactive isotope of Carbon) left in a sample. Other methods of archaeological dating are: dendrochronology, archaeomagnetic dating, luminescence dating. For radiocarbon dating the archeological artifact must contain organic material. The half-life of C - 14 is about 5,730 years.
