The correct answer is clan

They were grouped in clans that lived all over Scotland. They were formed around the idea of shared identity and shared history of a smaller population. Every clan has their own flag and their coat of arms and usually have a chief but it is not necessary and there are numerous clans that don't actually have a chief.
