How did a boycott benefit african americans in their quest for equality

    People like money. When the African-Americans started boycotting places like diners or public transport they also got media attention and white supporters too so the owners of those places eventually caved in under the financial and the media pressure and desegregated the diner counters and allowed everyone to eat at the same place.
