The Embargo Act of 1807 stopped trade between the U. S and Europe and its Caribbean colonies. As the early U. S thrived on trade, the embargo was hated by most people especially the traders and people in near the Eastern Coast. The cartoon character "Ograbme", depicted as an American Snapping Turtle, became popular at that time and demonstrated the negative public sentiment about the embargo.

The Embargo Act was signed by Jefferson in 1807 which closed all American ports from receiving foreign vessels. The famous device used to portray this is called "O Grab me!" or the" American Snapping Turtle".

"O Grab me!" is actually embargo spelled backward.
