the reformation witch hunts dealt with the fear of supernatural powers and evil people (witches) possessing those supernatural powers and using them for bad. The religious wars were very much about the same thing. They were concerned with people worshiping evil and damaging the purity of God and the "correct religion". While the end result and actual conflict details were about differing issues, the reasoning behind the conflicts was the same - fear, purity, and the desire to worship the correct supernatural powers.
