The division of India is usually known as the Partition of India - it was the division of India into India and Pakistan.

As India was getting independent from Great Britain, the Muslims feared that they would no have an appropriate representation in the new country, so they wanted a country of their own - so a part of India was carved out to make Pakistan. Pakistan was later divided into Pakistan and Bangladesh among linguistic and geographic lines.
