    The Dawes Act was passed by the federal government in 1887. This law gave Native American families 160 acres of farmland in hopes they would take up farming and become successful farmers. One of the main goals of this law was to get Native Americans to assimilate (blend in) to American culture. However, if these families failed at farming, the federal government could take their land away.
