I would say to understand the world from a secular perspective. The famous Scottish geologist James Hutton was part of the Enlightenment movement in Edinburgh and followed its precepts in his geological investigations that the natural world can be understood by actual hands-on investigation of the rocks in the field rather than idle speculation and that if the results contradicted the Bible or previous incorrect theories then the results if based on valid scientific work had to be listened to.
