What was the aim of carlisle, a boarding school for indians?

The motto of the Carlisle Boarding School was "Kill the Indian, Save the man." This did not mean to literally kill them. Rather, the focus of this school was to assimilate Native Americans into the modern American culture. This meant teaching the Native Americans to speak English, learn about America's history/laws, and to dress like other American citizens. Despite the best intentions of the school, this provided a traumatic experience for Native Americans. In these schools, they were often physically abused for using their native language.
