What do you think were some of the reasons government officials decided to build route 66 through the southwest rather than straight west from chicago?

    My guess would be for topological reasons. The southwest of the country, ie states such as Missouri, Kansas, Texas are pretty flat stretches of land. This would make it easier to drive on and build without interrupting national parks and forests.
